What are your expectations for this class and for yourself in this class? What do you think of when you hear the word movie? What is your favorite movie? Why? Required: 2 full, well-developed paragraphs.
Over the next two years studying IB Film, I cannot wait to learn more about such an intriguing medium. Movies are a very large part of my life and this class is a perfect opportunity for me to not only learn more about the movies I have already seen, but expand my film taste palate. Though it will take much work, I am excited and ready to learn to analyze and create film. To me, movies are pieces of art that pull you into another place. I think my preexisting love for older films will help me in a class that I know will cover movies from an earlier era. My favorite film is Stanley Kubrick's 1968 sci-fi masterpiece "2001: A Space Odyssey". The way it tracks humankind's travels into the unknown is original and visually stunning, as the special effects were and still are a major accomplishment in film. Kubrick makes viewers question our reliance in modern technology and how much it may control our lives (even more close to reality now in 2015). The breathtaking visuals transport you right next to Bowman as he goes further into the unknown of space. Paired with one of the most iconic scores in cinema, "2001: A Space Odyssey" never fails to mesmerize.

I decided to take IB Film because I like to watch movies, but I chose to actually follow through with the course because I wanted to get more serious about doing things I enjoy. In this class I hope to improve my knowledge on viewing, producing, and writing films, and I really hope we watch a lot of things I haven’t seen before, which might be a little difficult. I’m really psyched to be taking this class and I don’t have many expectations other than it being a lot of work, even so I am excited to learn a lot and work hard. When I think of the word movie I tend to think about the fact that it’s a little pretentious, but it also makes me think about art. I’m really into art, especially architecture, and I really love the concept that art comes in many different forms, such as buildings, or films. I think the amount of thought that goes into every second or every scene of a movie is so astounding that I thought it would be a good idea to get more into that. My favorite movie has got to be The Godfather (dir. Coppola). I love everything about it, the actors, the production choices, everything. Coppola takes the viewer, and transports them into a different era, one of thugs and arranged marriages, and makes it seem like the viewer is there looking into the Corleone’s lives. I pretty much think it has no faults (although my opinion could be swayed), and I would love to watch it in class. You could say I was pretty pumped when I saw it on the list.
I am taking this class because I've always enjoyed watching movies, but feel that I'm missing out on something in them. I'm hoping that this course will fill in the patches of my movie-watching experience. I also want to learn about making movies, because I have no experience with that (except for film-scoring) and think it looks interesting. When I think of the word movie, I think of groups and communities, because movies take a big group of people to make, and big groups of people make up the audiences that watch them. My favorite movie is "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" by Guy Ritchie. I love how he does everything. The shots in it always have something cool going on (hopefully I'll be able to explain this better after taking the course). I also like how the movie pieces together sort of separate story lines into one at the climax. I like "Pulp Fiction" and "Snatch" (also by Guy Ritchie) for the same reasons. There's one scene in "Snatch" where Avi goes to London, and it's cool: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OiKTGIxDuQ8 (the part I'm talking about is at the very end of the clip with the whiskey and the plane - watching it feels kind of like a wave). The quality of the youtube clip isn't very good.
My expectations for IB Film is that the class challenges me and makes me want to do my best because of the interest I have in the class. I expect it to make me work, but the work i do to be worth it in the future. I expect myself to try really, my best in this class. I want to see some of my artistic talents shine through in this class. I also expect to learn a lot of things that I don't already know about film. Things that make me really question and examine some of my recent favorite films. When I hear the word movie, it gives me a feeling of comfort and excitement, not only because it means i get to chill and do nothing, but because I like to almost live my life through movies, because when there’s something you can’t do in real life it’s easier to almost experience it through a film. I would say my favorite movie at the time is Ella Enchanted, and probably because the visual effort you can see they put into that movie. I love everything from the giants to the fairy’s sparkles. It makes me feel like the world is more real because the effects they used spread through the entire film. I also, love the storyline its a cute love-story and it’s also got qualities of a comedy.
I am really excited for this class, because I already like movies, but I know almost nothing about critically analyzing them. I don’t know the first thing about the nuances of cinema. I want to be able to look at movies at a higher level than whether or not they are entertaining, and expose myself to a much wider array of films. This seems like it’s going to be unlike other classes I’ve taken in the past. When I hear the word movie, my first thought is about the movie theater, even though I use Netflix or DVDs way more than going out to see movies. I also think about how I hate watching movies on TV because all the commercial breaks make them take about 3.5-4 hours, which is a lot when you’re just sitting there. My favorite movie would probably be Monsters Inc, because I find animation interesting and it has a great cast. I like animation because things can be exaggerated more - things like characters (designs, silhouettes, models, movements, expressions, etc.), settings, lighting, and color palettes.
I expect to learn fundamentals of film in the following years. Film is one of the few of many things that captivate me, works of imagination and innovation. I tend to analyze movies as is, but lack any actual knowledge on how or why movies should be critiqued. An in-depth training and expansion of taste and genre is something I want to take on. When I hear movie, I imagine an art, an art hidden by entertainment, whether satrical or dramatic. As difficult as it may be, I already feel confident and passionate to engage this course. I cannot name a specific "favorite film", because each film has its own merit for being a great film in many aspects. Some of my favorite films include "The Birds", "Night of the Living Dead", and "Jurassic Park". However, one movie I always return to is Ridley Scott's "Alien". I am very passionate about this work, primarily by the sound used upon it. Alien is based off of the art of H. R. Giger, and Ridley Scott's intention is to rework the concept of science fiction and incorporate a horrifying concept. "2001: A Space Odyssey" is a great film, and set some of the standards for all around science fiction, however displays very advanced concepts. Ridley Scott bases his ideas not of extremely bright and enjoyable atmospheres, but dark and ominous corridors and desolate planets. Instead of lively alien contact, Ridley resorts to a dark, insect/parasitic creature who's only intention is non-moral survival and the ultimate rape of nature. The atmosphere of the film is very intense with anticipation, built around a soundtrack of tense sounds and harsh instumental. Sigourney Weaver and the rest of the cast demosntrate great talent, as they pursue normal dialogue whilst possessing fear in the face of true evil, as well as Weaver establishing herself as a strong actress in the eventual sequels as well as other films. Prop work and creature design is vabulous, and helps enable the viewer to become enveloped with the film. Ultimately, it has wonderful production work with a strong message, one about nature, humanity, and technology which is rather explicit, but deserves it's viewing.
My expectations for IB Film are that it will challenge me to go above and beyond on my work, and that it will be an interesting class period. I also hope that it will turn me from a passive film viewer into an active film viewer. My expectations for myself are that I will learn how to make an engaging film, learn how to operate different forms of equipment, and that I will give 100% in class. The word movie makes me think of popcorn and North Park Theater and the feeling when you walk out of a movie theater and feel like you're waking up after a long dream. A lot of the time, I feel like I am living in the movies I watch, and the rest of the world shuts off. "People who LIKE movies have a favourite. People who LOVE movies can't possibly choose." - Nicole Yatsonsky. I think that quote summarizes my movie watching experience really well - I really love movies and I can't possibly pick a favourite. I do enjoy fantasy movies in particular though, because it provides a route to escape from the world we live in, if only for an hour or so. Two notable series that I really like are Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. I like those because every time I start the series, it feels like the first time I've ever seen the movies. Also, the movies are based off of books and the books are amazing. The fact that the novels are translated into such stunning screenworks definitely make the movies seem better.
In this class I expect myself to meet the challenges of the work load and the content. I joined because I am highly interested in the subject material, and want to take this chance to garner some knowledge and put it under my belt. When I hear the word "movie", I think of any sort of full-length picture, live, animated, or otherwise. I find it really hard to try and think of a favorite movie, but mine would probably, as of right now, be Deadpool or The Producers. Deadpool because of the action and humor, or The Producers for the plot and humor.

ReplyDeleteI expect this class to teach me to fully understand films and film making. I expect myself to dive into this course and learn as much as I can with the materials and information given. My goal is to work as hard as I can, soaking up every aspect of this course so my film watching experience is ruined. When I hear the word “movie” I think of popcorn and drive-ins, basically the traditional family movie night. However, by the end of this class I hope to hear the word “movie” and think of an indulging cinematic experience. I would like this class to change my way of thinking, so I can experience and analyze a film instead of just watching it.
To be incredibly honest my favorite movie is very cliché and not what a film student would want to admit is their favorite movie. This movie is not known for its advancements in the film industry, nor is it listed on the IB Film Master List of Films and Directors. My favorite movie is “Dirty Dancing” directed by Emile Ardolino. This film is my favorite because to me it never gets old. Jennifer Gray and Patrick Swayze were such great actors that their viewers, even twenty-eight years later, can still feel their chemistry on the screen. Not only was the acting in this film phenomenal, the soundtrack was so carefully chosen which allowed these melodies to correctly convey the emotions of the viewers and make the audience feel like they were in fact having the time of their lives.
